CRIME IN DUNEDIN
FALLING-OFF IN SERIOUS OFFENCES. SOME BENEFICIAL LEGISLATION. Press Association. ■DUNEDIN, Dec. 30. Inspector O’Brien, in the course of some remarks to a reporter this evening. remarked that lie expected the statistics for the Dunedin district for 1907 would show a slight increase in minor offences, hut undoubted fall-ing-off in cases of a more serious nature. He emphasised the beneficial effects of tlie 'Habitual Criminals Act in preventing an annual invasion by criminals from the Common wealth, and its deterrent effects on local criminals. Ho also stated that tlie Gaming Act of last session liad_ already done away with street betting, and had closed reputed gaming-houses. He further eulogised tlie beneficial results that had followed tlie passing of tho Firearms Act, and the provisions of tlie 'Police Offences Act, dealing yvith consorting together of vagrants and members of the criminal class.
