A three-days’ lawn tennis tournament under the auspices of the Ashburton Tennis Club was completed on Saturday afternoon, and was most successful. There were over 200 entries, and the matches included the South Canterbury championships and handicapped games. The results of the finals wore as follows :- I —Alon’s Singles (South Canterbury championship) : G. Ollivier beat U. G. White, 6—3, 5—6, 6—4. Men's Doubles (South Canterbury ohamjnonship): W. BOWLING A goodly number of bowlers were present ut the Gisborne Club s* green on Saturday when a number of interesting games were played, ihe handicap singles competition was continued. Itedstone with a handicap of 10 beat Fordyce, whose handicap was 9, by 22 points to 16. The following games were also played: Paltridge and F. Martin 20 v. J. F. Pettie and H. Lewis, 19; Fordvce, Collins, Wilson and F. Martin 31 v. G. Boulton, Beere, A. T. Hookey and J. W. Winkle, 20. . The green at the Turanganui Club was playing in fine condition on Saturday and several practise games were "indulged in by members present.

TOURNAMENT AT MARTON,

Press Association. '' MARTON, Dec. 29. A bowling tournament concluded at Marton on* Saturday. J. A. Nash’6 team, from Palmerston, which represents that town at Auckland. won the big event, and Patterson Bros., two veteran bowlers from the St. John’s Club, Wanganui, won the doubles from Sutcliffe and Sbarpo (Marton) after an exciting and close-ly-contested game. Harry Sutcliffe (Marton) secured the championship for singles, and H. Hunt and A. W. Woolley (Marton) won the Consolation Pairs.

ROWING. The Poverty Bay Club’s single sculls handicap competition was continued on Saturday evening, when ■Roche met Smith. The former had the advantage throughout, and won easily by several lengths. A good number of members of the Poverty Bay Club brave signified, tlieir willingness to go to Napier in March next to represent the club in the Maiden, Junior, and Youths’ Fours. WESTPORT REGATTA

The. Westport regatta, tho first lield for many years, eventuated yesterday,' in fine weather. There was a lare-o attendance. The first-class sailrace was won by Freeman and Scanlon’s Ito.se, with W heater s Irrrk second, and .McPherson’s Spray third. The first two are Westport ,and the third Grey mouth boats. A few yards separated the three placed .boats. The second-class sailing race was won by AVheatley’s Shag, with McPherson’s Spray second and dilate and Collins’ Osnrev third. .Protests were entered against the first and second boats in the Senior Fours race, Kawatiri (Westport) entered two crews, one including three of the unbeaten crew that twice won the JNear Zealand championship, and Blenheim and Nelson each entered a crew, ihe race resolved itself into a struggle between tho Kawatiri champions and Blenheim, but in their keenness to make the most of the current in the river the crews fouled on several occasions, Blenheim being held responsible for tho first) and disqualified. The race was won by Kawatiri, witn Nelson second. Blenheim led by two lengths for a time; then Kawatiri took the lead and kept ahead. •Blenheim were making a game fight at tho finish when the foul occurred. The regatta committee decided at a meeting last night to advise Blenheim that, according to rule 18, the Amateur Bowing Association judge s decision is final, and therefore they could not forward the appeal lodged against Kawatiri’s win in Saturday s senior fours race.

The cricket championships were suspended yesterday, and a- game played between the Auckland representatives who defeated Canterbury and nil eleven composed of colts. The colts batted first, and were all out tor 68 (L. Robinson 15). Rolf took three wickets for 18 runs and Kerr three for 12 runs.-The representatives wore all disposed of for 111 runs (HrookeSmitli 21, Haddon 20, Cummings 20, and Prime 10). The Otago v. Auckland match commences hero on Thursday tor the Plunket shield. There is much interest in the contest.

OTAGO v. WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Dec. 29. Ideal weather conditions prevailed yesterday when the Otago-Wellington match was resumed to-diy. The local team made a wonderful recovery, the last four wickets adding 244 runs. Blnckloek gave a masterly exposition of clean, vigorous hitting, registering 60 in 54 minutes. Eleven fours were included in his score, seven of them being from successive hits'. Mahoney was batting for 3 hours IS minutes for his 84’runs. Only one chanco was debited against him. At 33 Monaghan and Hales established a local record in representative matches Inputting on 84 for the last wicket.
