THREE PERSONS DROWNED.
HEROIC EFFORTS AT RESCUE. JURY ASK COUNCIL TO BUILD BATHS.
Press Association. BLENHEIM, Dec. 29. A distressing bathing fatality occurred yesterday afternoon, by which Mrs. Arthur Farmer (37), her daughter Rona (17), and Zita Shaw (12) lost their lives. A party of ladies and children were bathing in tho Opawa river outside the town when Zita Shaw was carried off her feet, and Mrs. and Miss Farmer went to her assistance, but were also carried away-. Zita Shaw’s mother, a good swimmer, made heroic attempts at rcjscue and almost succeeded with her daughter, and after failing with her attended Mrs. Farmer, but unsuccessfully. Mrs Shaw then tried to recover the bodies by diving. The bodies were shortly after recovered by men who arrived after the alarm was given. Lengthy efforts at resuscitation failed. At the inquest today a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. Mrs Shaw’s bravery- and the prompt action of the police and others was commended by tho jury, who aro also of opinion that the Borough Council should provide proper swimming baths. Tho funeral of the three victims took place this afternoon.
