CRICKET.

(By “Short Slip”.) Wiolilers of the willow have not find a very busy tiino during tho holidays. In view of the proposed visit to Auckland a match between two selected teams was played on tho now turf wicket on the Domain on Saturday last. Much surprise avas felt by a large number of the players that the piteli should be used, as tho general opinion was, that owing to lack of proper supervision anil a fair amount of work both pitch and outfield wore in a very backward state. However, ns matters turned out the wicket played and wore well. With the changes that have been made in tlio last couple of weeks the ground is now looking much better and gives every promise of turning out well. What is rei’i’ly wanted, however, and wanted badly is tho addition of some four or five feet at each end of the wicket. This to bo of any use should be attended to immediately. Coming to the match itself -.The elevens were picked by Mesrs AV. Gibson and Hnllamore, and the latter’s team had an easy victory. Gibson was top scorer for his sido with 29, but lie is not tho Gibson of old, anil is sadly out of form so far this season. On the other sido tho consistency of Hallamoro’s batting was once more demonstrated, as lie again Flayed a beautiful and free innings, his off strokes being beautifully executed and full of vim. On Boxing Day teams representing the Thursday and Saturday players had a “go” and the Saturdayers won easily with something to spare. Neither side had a full team as selected, which is not to lie wondered at when the manner in which the team was picked is taken into account; of this I shall have something to say at a later date. Cary played a great innings for the “end of the week” crowd, and was not out- 57 when stumps were drawn. Lasker and Sharp also upheld their reputations ns free scorers. On the Thursday side J. Gibson was top scorer with 39, a very prettily innings. It is extremely improbable at time of writing that a team will get away to Auckland. A r ery few players being inclined to make the trip. It is just, possible that the form displayed by some of the “big guns” in the recent trial matches may be responsible for this.
