LAWN TENNIS. LOCAL PLAYERS AT HASTINGS. (Special to Times.) NAPIER. Dec. 27. At the Hustings tennis tournament. Gisborne players di<l not succeed in getting into the finals. In the Men’s Handicap Singles Coleman got into the semi-finals, and was beaten by Broughton, who won the event. In the doubles Coleman jwd Alden were beaten by the limit men, who won the event. In the fourth round in the Ladies’ Handicap Singles, Miss Bright got into the final, being beaten by Miss Snow Clark after an oven game. ROWING. The first heat in the Poverty Bay Club’s single scull race for Mr. Broad's trophy was rowed last evening. when Barnes (40see) met IV. Williams (30sec). The former made the Pest of liis start, and secured about three lengths’ advantage, and maintained it until Dr. Williams' was reached. Williams then made his dash, which resulted in both being on equal terms at the bridge, the boats keeping together for about L yards, both men rowing hard. From opposite the Turanganui Hotel Williams again spurted, and after an exciting finish won by half a length. RIFLE-SHOOTING. NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Press Association. WANGANUI, Dec. 27. The Wanganui Rifle Association’s North Island championship meeting was continued to-day in fine weather. Rifleman McLey. Whakataki R.C., won the champion belt with an aggregate score of 312. Sergt. Morgan (Napier R.Y.) was second with 303. and Drummond (Dannevirke) third with 804. The other highest aggregates were: Rifleman Kylo (Linton) and Lance-Corporal Parnell (Wanganui) 302, Captain Craw (Linton) 302, Bugler Soler (Wanganui), Rifleman Cameron (Opaki), and Rifleman Wilfloughbv (Gladstone It.C.) SOI each. The Opaki No. 1 team won the Champion Teams Match with 1270, Palmerston North 1258, Wanganui Rifles 1238, Opaki No. 2 1208. Private Frederick was top scorer in the Wellington Match. Rifleman McLey occupied a similar position in the Wanganui match. The meeting was a record success in every way. CRICKET. N.iS.W. SCHOOL TEACHERS. Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 27. The team of New South Wales teachers commenced a cricket match with eleven teachers from Wellington district yesterday on the College ground. Wellington in their first innings realised 258. Burns 86, Dempsey 32. Monaghan 31, Rogers 28, and Mason 26. New South Wales’ total was 177. McGrath 40, Deer (not out) 35, Rose 19. Bowling analysis: Wellington : Monaghan 3 wickets for 33, Beechev 3 for 22, Mason 2 for 45. New South AVales: O’Neill 5 for 136, Smith 3 for 25, Roberts 1 for 15. The match ended in a win for the visitors by five wickets. Wellington’s second innings closed for 153, of which Monaghan made 29 and Beechey 20. O’Neill captured six wickets for 82, Smith 3 for 49, and Roberts 1 for 11. This left the visitors 239 to make to win, and they made these at a cost of five wickets. Smith made 80, 'McMillan 64, Roberts 33, and Deer 20. Monaghnn took three wickets for 22, Hodges 1 for SS, and Griffiths 1 for 27. MATCHES IN NAPIER. NAPIER, Dec. 27. A team of cricketers from the Petone Cricket Club, Wellington,'played a colts’ team at Napier yesterday, and defeated them by an innings and 37 runs. To-day they played a country team at Hastings and beat them by 10 wickets. OTAGO v. WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Dec. 2f. Wellington and Otago met this afternoon in a match, which, so far has been productive of some of the feeblest batting seen on the Basin Reserve for a long time. The visitors went in on a good wickofc, _ and. ivgpg disposed of for 115, of which Fisher made 34 by vigorous hitting. llie rest failed,' but Siedeberg was wrongly given out Ibw when 21, and shaping for a good innings. Cobcroft took four wickets for 20. Wellington did even worse. No one could stand up to Torrance, the left-hand bowler, who clean-bowled six men, only 23 so far being hit off him. His Yorkers were especially deadly. i -'lahoney (not out 16) is the only batsman who has shaped respectably, the total being only 55, with four wickets to fall.
