Press Association. AUCKLAND. A conference of the New Zealand Dental Association commences at Auckland on January oth. It is exipected that 150 dentists will attend. The delegates will be entertained at luncheon by tho HOll. G. Fowlds, and lady visitors will bo entertained by the president of the Auckland Dental Association. 011 the evening of January oth the Mayor presides at a public meeting, having reference to the treatment of the teeth of people unable to pay for dentistry is suggested. A dental department established in the Auckland hospital is comdentists giving their services gratuitously. . Tho cargo bv the steamer Quito, which lias arrived from San Francisco, is all 'for New Zealand except a million feet of timber for Australia. PALMERSTON. 'Lieutenant (Herd, of (Wellington, has been elected judge of the North Island brass band, contest, to bo held at New Plymouth in February, 1908. ( The first annual sale of thoroughbred yearlings of the Manawatn Stud .Company took place yesterday. Five yearlings sold for 575 .guineas, an average of 175 guineas. Tho highest Iprico was 500 guineas, for a bandKouio colt by Multiform —Humour, purchased by A. Shearsbv, on behalf of “Mr. Highden.” A Sou.lt—Cecile filly realised 230 guineas, which price was the full bid of F. Easton, Foxton. All the yearlings offered on behalf of the company were sold. A filly by Kilclieran (imp.)—Purity, offered on account of J. Baldwin, was sold to G. A. Tattle, Palmerston:, for 80 guineas. A filly by Soult —Santa Katerina, and a colt ,by Captain AVeb'b —Marvellous, offered on separate accounts, were passed ill at 90 and 100 guineas respectively. WELLINGTON. Some time during last night an elderly woman, who lias not been identified, fell over a cliff at Beyliss quarry, Island Bay, and was killed, her neck being broken. John Sinrs, aged 40, a single man, climlbed to tile top of a lamp-post at Ilona. Bay wharf this morning, intending to make a long dive. 111 the descent lie struck the edge of the wliarf and sank. The £oo3' has not been recovered. CHRISTCHURCH. At 3 o’clock this morning a fire broke out in the Wiltshire Buildings, at the corner of High ,and Tuam streets. Masters, an. outfitter, occupied the ground floor, but he had time to- take out most of his stock, which was insured for £7OO in the Australian Alliance. Woods, dentist,partly saved his property, which was insured' for £250 in the New Zealand office. Ha rvey and McDonald, tailors, and 'Madame Anlie, milliner, whose premises were practically destroyed, were uninsured. A. D. Kuril, jeweller, who only opened liis shop on Saturday, had his stock covered in. an office unknown, but a .large portion was saved. The building belongedl to A. J. White, and was insured for £SOOO, £IOOO each in the Victoria, Phoenix, Atlas, New Zealand, and North Queensland. The cause of the fire is unknown. The building was a. brick 011 c. . A big portion of the upstairs premises was unoccupied. A young man sleeping 011 the premises was cut off 'by a burning staircase, and was rescued by tho fire escape. The strenuous efforts of.tho brigade saved Keiupthornq and Prosser s establishment adjoining. TJMARU. iScotb -Bros., of Christchurch, have just completed an electric light installation here, and the town was lit for the first time last night by the new illuminaiit, which was exceedingly satisfactory.
