MAGISTERIAL.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER, 21. (Before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M.) Drunkenness. —A first offender for drunkenness was convicted and fined the amount of his bail, 18s, witli 2s costs. Alleged Assault.—Thomas Charles Webster was charged with having on the 19t.h inst. committed an assault on Mr J. A. Lucas, licensee of the Coronation Hotel. Accused pleaded not guilty and was undefended. Sorgt. Williams conducted the prosecution and called J. A. Lucas, who deposed that the defendant had refused to leave the premises of his hotel at 10 o’clock o.n the night of the 19th inst. Witness also stated that when he eventually did get the defendant outside defendant struck him and pushed him against the wall. — James Egan, barman, gave corroborative evidence as to the assault.- — His Worship said that he was satisfied an assault, although not a serious one, had been committed. Defendant would bo convicted and fined £1 .with 2s costs, in default 4 days’ imprisonment with hard labor. Refusing to leave Licensed Pre-mises.—-Webster -was also charged with on the s.une date refusing to leave licensed premises when requested to do so. Accused pleaded guilty and His Worship said he would only inflict a. small penalty in this case — 10s, ill default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Alleged Theft.—A further charge •was preferred against Webster of having on the 19th December stolen two £1 notes from the person of Frederick Trowiu. On- the application of the police a remand was granted in this case until December 28th. Bail was allowed —self in £25 and two sureties of £lO each.
