[Correspondence 011 public matters is wolcomed at all times, but it must bo distinctly understood that this journal is in no way associated with tho opinions of its correspondent!).]
[To Tins Editor.] .Sir.—At tlio County Council’smeeting hold yesterday, i notice that a discussion arose respecting Mr Heir Hardie, and that in view of his recent utterances in India he should not receive 'any oificial -recognition. I was most astounded at tlio remarks of Councillors Kenway and Lysnar, who I thought posed themselves as Friends of tlio Workers. Wliat evidence are they judging Mr Hardie on ? Sinijily on the rumors circulated through the capitalistic press, who are scheming ail'd planning in all manner of -devices, to dampen tlio emancipation ol the Workers, and in Mr Kcir Hardie, they know they have a man to fear, which (makes them stoop to such methods. X am of opinion that tho -above Councillors are no friends of the Workers; they simply fear men like Hardie, whose one and only motive is to elevate tho masses, and I think that tho workers might bo somewhat more enlightened •with his views. -Of course, over this they throw tho cloak and voice aloud, that through his actions in India otc. If the proposed Trades and Labor Council had only got into working power, I feel confident they would take the councillors’ remarks in hand.—lm, etc., “JAUL.” Gisborne, Dec. 20.
