About 10.30 p.m. on Saturday night a contractor named AVm. Canian was the victim of a rather serious assault. On Boxing Day tho Salvation Army picnic at Bushmero is to tako place. Conveyances will leave the Barracks at 0 o’clock. Refreshments, summer drinks, etc., may be had on the grounds, and hot water will be provided free.

Yesterday was anniversary day with the Salvation Army young people, and the services were well attended, in spite of the inclement weather. In tho afternoon, prizes earned through the year were presented by ’Mr. E. Yardley, and that gentleman and Mr. Hargreaves gave special prizes lor good conduct and proficiency. Various musical items were given hy the children.

Considerable dissatisfaction was expressed by a umnbor of tho Monowai’s passengers from Auckland last night, at tho long interval which elapsed from their arrival in the Bay until they were eventually landed. Tho vessel arrived in the Bay at 6.20 p.m., and tho Tuatea only returned to the wharf at 10 p.m. Tho inclemency of the weather early exhausted the supply of cabs, and this added in no small degree to the discomfort of the arrivals.
