ROWING.
The first heats for the Grieve Cup and sculling championship were rowed last- evening oh the AYaimata river. Dustin (Gisborne) and Nicholas (Poverty Bay) were the first pair, and an excellent start was effected by. Mr. J. AVebb. Dustin got wel/1 away, and had established a lead of about a length at the bend, which he maintained to tho finish. Nicholas struck one of the piles coming through the bridge, but this did not materially affect the finish, as lie was tiring fast and Dustin was going strongly. Mr. H. J. Grieve acted as judge, and his verdict was n favor of Dustin by a length and a half, in the good time of smin 10 2-ssec.—Kershaw (Gisborne) and IK Jones (Poverty Bay) were the other competitors, and got away to a good start. The pair rowed well together, going very fast for a long time, and when the bridge was reached w'ere on fairly levcil terms. A rattling good race to the post resulted in a win for the Poverty Bay representative by a bare halflength Jones was the popular “fancy” for the race, and Kershaw evoked great applause for his plucky am determined effort. Time, smin 10 l-osoc. To-night the final will be rowed between Dustin and Jones, and an excellent race should be witnessed. Th Poverty Bay Club also rowed off another couple of races in the double sculls competition. AA 7 . McGuffie and Barr.es defeated Pritchard and Newton rather easily by a length, and C. Clark and Briscoe succumbed to K. McGuffie and Thaxter by the narrow margin of three feet, after a splendid finish.
