Press Association. PALMERSTON, Dec. 14. Oil Saturday afternoon Constable Connor was stabbed in the abdomen by Wm. Waugh, a well-known farmer' of Stoney Creek, when, arresting him for drunkenness. Waugh is 72 years of age. The weapon used was a- pruning knife, and the wound is a serious one. Connor behaved pluckily, and with tlie_ assistance of a bystander got Waugh into a cab before giving way. Medical assistance was called, and Connor was conveyed to the hospital, where ho is .progressing satisfactorily. DUNEDIN, Dec. 15. Tlie annual Hospital Saturday collection was taken up yesterday in delightful weather. Some 370 ladies devoted themselves to the work in the city and suburbs, and collecting extended from 7.30 a.m. till 9 p.m. They met with a splendid response on the part of the public, and about £755 was collected, or about £65 less than last year, when £B2O was subscribed.
A large one-storey wooden building at North-East Valley, occupied by Blissard and McVicar, sash and door manufacturers and carrying an extensive stock, was burned down at 10 p.m. on Friday. There was no water supply. Mrs. Sullivan’s drapery stock was insured in tlie South British for £250. Tlie insurances on. the Valley fiTe are: Blissard and McVicar, Guardian Assurance, £SOO, of which £75 is on tlie building, £175 on the stock, £l5O on the machinery, £IOO on the timber; the Union Hat Co. had its machinery and stock insured in the Atlas Assurance for £350.
INVERCARGILL, Dec. 15. Frank Brandlord, aged 8, was driving with his parents on Saturday afternoon, when the horse became restive. _ It was pulled up, and the trap seemingly ran on to its heels and it kicked twice. The boy was sitting in the front or the trap "with his back to the horse. The second kick caught him on the back of the neck. He died on tko way to the hospital. WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. A mail named Thomas Hilligan was picked up in Wellington Harbor by some boatmen on Saturday afternoon. Hilligan was apparently dead, but Constable Butt-ar applied artificial restoration, and succeeded in restoring animation in. about 15 minutes.
Charles Duncan, a fanner, of Jolinsonville, while driving in a gig in Lambton Quay yesterday, was overtaken by a tram car, the gig being struck and Duncan thrown out. He was picked up unconscious, and found to be suffering from concussion. Ho was sent to the hospital' . WANGANUI, Doc. 15. A fire broke out last night in a. ■hop in the Avenue occupied by Mr. Clarkson, cycle dealer. The building was gutted, hut the stock of bicycles was saved. Tlie upstairs portion of tlie Freezing Co.’s retail shop adjoining was also destroyed. The insurances are unavailable owing to the owner’s absence from town.
