MOTU v. THURSDAY. ELEVEN. AN EASY VICTORY FOR THE VISITORS. The Motu players commenced the opening match of their four at Victoria Domain yesterday morning, 'when ' they met an eleven representing the Thursday players of Gisborne. Play commenced at 10.30 a.m., when the weather was fine, though a strong nor’-westorly wind caused tlie ■temperature to rise steadily during the day, and made strenuous exertion warm work indeed during tlie afternoon. THE PLAY. IV. Read, tho Motu captain, won the toss from J. Gibson, who was elected skipper of the local eleven, and the Gisborne men had to take tho field. The opening -was none too promising for Motu, as E. Derecourt, the dashing hitter of the team, was clean bowled bv the first hall howled bv J. Vack. It was well pitched up, and the batsman -apparently lost sight of it altogether. This was a great disappointment to Motu, as Derecourt is in capital hatting form this season, and scored a brilliant 74 (retired) at Motu about la. fortnight ego. !L. Campbell joined F. Hansen, and the pair by steady play put a. .better complexion on ithe game. 1 lie Gisborne bowling was by no means.good. J. TVa'ck -trundled steadi! v. but Oliver and Austin failed to find a length, and sent down many Trose deliveries on the leg side. Even- ; .1 .1 ] v Hansen had the bad fortune t:> bo thrown out by a. smart bit of fielding and accurate return by Emanuel, which hit the stumps. Campbell was shaping confidently, and had a score -to liis credit, when bo stepped in front in attempting to v ,-rce a full-pitched ball ifrom Austin , ) leg, -and paid the penalty. Anderson, a recent arrival from England, who hails from Durham Coun\y, handled his hat nicely, and was j'.ivt warming to liis work when he -as smartly stumped by Gibson off '•Vack. From that on until file lun..heon interval the visitors had a. bad time, and tlie board- showed eight wickets down for the small total of 37 when file adjournment was made. Tlie local players were the guests the local eleven at luncheon at ..fie Royal .Hotel. On resuming play -V. Read and P. Clark rattled on the i nils mt a good rate, and soon brought up the century. The Motu ciptain went in -late on account of not yet having struck form this season, but lie regained it all right yesterdav, and his spirited innings tor 37 waV the means of his side totalling the respectable score of 117, when it -appeared very probable they would not reach the hundred. As before mentioned,' the Gisborne bowling was not strong, and had tlie Motu batsmen gone at '.L- more resolutely they .-. juld have amassed a larger total. ■The Gisborne batsmen went to the wickets confidently with such a moderate total as 117 to face, but they
reckoned without the Motu trundlers, and were all sent to the rightabout i:i double quick time for ithe ridiculously small total of .43. W. Macdoni!d (5 -for 10) and L. Campbell (4 for 13) were 'the destroying agents, and both bo.n'hd capitally, though tlie weakness of the batting had more to do with the wretched display than .the ■ excellence of the bowling. The Motu fieldsmen were keen and alert, and •I'a-ve few runs away. The local men -followed on, and .give a much better display, hitting rjp 143 for six wickots in about an hour and a half. iD. Miller (59) was the principal contributor, and .hit lustily for his runs, though lie was leniently treated by -the fieldsmen, who- dropped -several chances. J. Long (26) also batted well, and Oliver knocked up 19 in Quick time. At 20' -minuites to 6 the Gishorno captain “declared,’ which left the .M°tu players with 70 runs to win and 50 .minutes to play. It was a forlorn 'hope, liowever, and at 6.30 the score s’! >od at 4 wickots .for 10 runs. Motu -thus won on the first innings by 74 runs, and thoroughly deserved their win. .Messrs. R. Thclwall and R. W. Cary -acted as umpires, and Mir. G. Vittv as scorer. The following rre the.scores: MOTU.—First Innings. E. Derecourt, b AVack 0 F. Hansen, thrown out 11 L.
