The supply of water at the Sievwright Memorial Fountain seems erratic. Once recently no water came through the mouths of the little lions, a day or two ago the water gushed out in'great style and splashed the roadway about three feet around, while yesterday it trickled out as if the hot weather had made it not care whether it came or not.
Yesterday while a. horse was pulling a dray full of cases across the footpath into Messrs. Mucky, Logan and Coy’s yard it fell, and in some way became jammed on the ground, and unable to rise. Happily the horse was a quiet one and the driver was enabled to unharness him and free him from his uncomfortable position without mishap.

The advantages to bo derived by stockowners in dehorning cattle was strikingly illustrated at the Matawliero sale-yesterday. In three pens of dehorned cattle everything was quiet, 'while in -the other pens it was not uncommon to see a beast not alone severely gored, but in some ca.'-es with the horn* torn completely off. Mr. A. Donald, local representative of the Labor Department, has been advised that Mr. Geotgeson, late representative of the Labor Department in Gisborne, was ill ,Masterton on Wednesday, having finished the inspection of shearers’ accommodation 'in the North Island. As showing the feeling of at least some of those- who attended the Matawhero sale yesterday, it -may not be out of place to mention- that a few ol (the “bone and sinew” of the country were discussing the recent disastrous fire in Parliament buildings. In the course of the conversation mention was .made of the documents which had been destroyed, and one of the party was overheard to remark, with a lurid adjective, that he “'hoped tlit' Land Bill was amongst the number of those burnt.”
Tho old saying, “Competition is tho life of trade,” was borne out at the stock sale yesterday, to the advantage of many of those -who attended the sale. Some little time ago a second luncheon room was erected, and has been well patronised, with the result-that the tariff in the original room was considerably reduced yesterday. The change was much appreciated by a. large number o'f those present, and it remains to be seen whether or not the quality of tho luncheon will ’decrease with the price.
The doings at the wharf aro usually more or less of a/prosaic nature, but the departure of the Tuatea to connect with the Waikare on, Wednesday morning was the occasion- of a somewhat romantic episode. From what can be gathered it appears that a young lady resident of this town, finding tho quietness of semi-rural life somewhat irksome after the pleasures of a larger city, endeavored, evidently without the consent of her lawful guardians, to proceed to Auckland. Unfortunately for the young lady in question, although she got safely -aboard the tender, her ultimate departure was frustrated by the arrival of the inevitable “stern parent,” who conveyed the would-be prodigal homo again, amidst- lamentations.
