TEAMS TO PLAY MOTU. (By “Short Slip.”) Here we are again with our country week with Motul Our three teams to play on Thursday, Friday and Saturday are all good ones. The Thursday team (which is a. very good one) is:— J. Lang: A steady left hand bat; reliable first wicket. Austin: His first game as a rep.; a nice .free right-hand batsman and good field ; bowls fairly. Brown: A very accurate mediumpace riglit-hand bowler. J. AVaek: Good left-hand batsman; good field and change right-hand medium to fast bowler. 'J. Pine: Best bowler in team, medium paced, ball bangs a lot; very improved bat and good out field. Miller: Free right hand bat" and if playing steadily is reliable; good field. Emanuel: Splendid out field; improving batsman. j J. Gibson: Wicket-keeper of team; .also best batsman; very hard man to get out; scores freely when going; rather attractive on tlie off. Grant r Tho hitter of the team ; should develop into a great batsman; fine field and fair change bowler. Oliver: Left-hand howler; at times bowls well; good field and hits well. Grinlinton: The colt of tho team ; very plucky; fields well. The team should be captained by J. Gibson. They "will give a very fair account of themselves, but their batting is the weakest part. The Friday team may he altered heforo the day and I will not deal with them. The Saturday' team is:— Hallamore: The probable'wicketkeeper of tho team (if not bowling) ; is a past master in the position,’ also at present best batsman in the Bay; good change bowler if used only for a change. AY. Gibson: At present outofform; last season easily’ best batsman in tho bay; good field. JBarnby: A fine steady right-hand batsman; wonderful patience; good field at point arid- fair change bowler. Young: A fast scoring left-hand batsman with very good defence; good length bowler; good field. Charles: The stock bowler' of the team; very reliable in length. Lasker: The hitter of tho team; good field.
Harlcer: Tho break bowler, breaks from both sides; fino field and steady bat. AVilson : Fine scoring bat; great heart; good field and cliango bowler. Olsen: i/Uost improved bat in Bay ; brilliant field. Baxter: A littlo moro than medium pace bowler; very reliable man ; also good left-hand bat und fino field and catch.
Cary: AA’ill keep wickets if Hallamore bowls; is a steady right hand hat; scores quickly when sot. As is seen it is a strong batting sido and tlie fielding should ho up to first class form. Tho bowling is on the weak sido. H. Cato in his first match at Napier was run out after making five runs. H. Robinson at Auckland was moro fortunate as he scored 40 in his first senior match. TOIvOMARU BAY v. TOLAGA. (FROM OUR CORKESFONDENT.) On Saturday last tho first of the East Coast Cricket Association matches took place at Tolaga, tho Tokomaru and Tolaga teams beings tho contestants. Tokoniaru won easily by nine wickets. As is usual between these townships, tho utmost good feeling prevailed, and tho game was very enjoyable. Mr. J. Moore and players of each side took duty as umpires, and although there were several nice points to decide upon, no mistakes were made. Tho Tolaga C. C. entertained the visitors to lunch and afternoon tea. Th© enjoyment of tho day was somewhat marred by a painful accident that b""' 1 . Mr. Oates, senior, Tokomaru’s cricket enthusiast. In the early part of tlio game the hall was being thrown about, and Mr. Oates received a hard knock in the eye. He received kindly attention from Dr. A\ 7 eekes, hut had to retire from th/ .field and spend the day in bed. Iv will bo a few days before Mr Oates is -himself again. Tho pitch was fairly good, but somewhat bumpy at one end, and those players who stayed in any length of time had to stand many hard knocks. The winners showed good form, both with the bat and ill the field. In their first innings the partnership between Sigley and AY. Oates, junr., put oil 90 runs, when the latter was bowled. Sigley’s was the tenth wicket to fall, and Ids 51 was the result of good and patient cricket. The best field on the ground was H. Fail-lie, who showed all his old Skill at point. J. Oates, as wicket-keeper was good p. he stumped two of Tolaga’s best men, and. caught two others, one catch being a very smart one. AVitli practice Oates will be able to dispense with a long-stop, and will become a first-class wicket-keeper. AY. Oates, junr., was an excellent captain, and worked his bowlers and tlie field to the best advantage. Tolaga had the disadvantage of losing tho services of Dr. AVeekes, their captain, ho being called away after his first innings. Tokoniaru, however, allowed alnother player in his place.
