THE GISBORNE CLUB’S TOURNAAIENT. One of tho most interesting of ;ho matches that arc being played in connection with the above club s tournament took place at the Kftstl courts last evening, when AA r . J ■ Barlow and C. Blackburn met S. A. Cover and AV. L. Coleman in the third round of tho men’s doubles. The former pair received a liaiKUcap ■j.f 5, and the game was 95 up. At the commencement Cover anel Co*.oman worked together nicely, me! by good smashing soon abolislic-d the handicap and established a .-.light lead. Then they went off som own it, and Barlow’s accurate lobbing and placing kept the score fairly even for .- .vine- time, though he was at this stage poorly supported by B'ackburn. whose faulty'strokes were to some extent compenstated for by excellent serving. AAilth the gamehat- concluded Blackburn commenced to lob with rare accuracy, and this substantial backing-up enabled Barlow to gradually draw -head. Guv. r and Coleman relied chiefly upon smashing and fast drives, lilt tbc-c frequently found the net. However. when Barlow’s score stood ■-t. Vj Cover was only 3 points behind, but it was Blackburn’s service, and wlu-ii it was finished the score was >2-83 in favor of Barlow. Goter hen took serve, and made a briliaiit effort to retrieve the position, iml actually took the score to 88-92, but bis run came too late, and bis jpponents took the next 3 points ■ml the match. A slight shower which fell during the progress of the tame interfered somewhat with Ibo day. making the ground slippery me! the balls heavy.
