WAIHIRERE QUARRY.

BREEZE IN THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. CLEAR STATEMENT OF AFFAIRS WANTED. At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the Engineer reported ns follows on the Waihirere quarry: “I received notice to lay’ out a suificient area for a quarry on the ground at Waihirere, but- by’ a- later memorandum I am told only to mark it off on the plan and not on tlie ground. I wish to point out that this is impossible for self-evident reasons. AVhilst on the subject of tlie Waihirere quarry I wish to draw tho Council’s attention to tlie fact that tho stone is being used by the Railway Department for metalling the railway yard. Considerable stacks of the spawls are now lying at the station. Cr. Bright said it seemed odd, seeing that both the Council and tho Natives wished to quash the present tile of the Council to the Waihirere Block, that the title was not quashed. It seemed that all tho things brought up in the Council were merely red-herrings thrown across the track.

The Mayor said the Natives had not agreed to quash the title. Tho Council got the land from tho Government-, and they- could not quash the title until the Natives agreed to do so. Cr. Mann said that there should bo a letter from tlie solicitors on the matter. They had been going on this question for two months, and seemed no further ahead.

Cr. Sheridan supported Cr. Mann. 11l the past they had heard various explanations of the position of affairs, hut they were entitled to a statement from the • solicitor. He moved that the Clerk request tlie solicitor to write explaining the matter. The Mavor said it amused him, who had been working for years to get the whole block for the Council, to he accused of trying to block the acquisition. Cr. Williams wanted to know why the Engineer should he warned off the ground. There seemed no reason for so doing. It was finally decided to get a letter from the solicitors showing the present position of affairs.
