' f ; Tho weather was beautifully fine. ■ The heavy rain.on Saturday night had not affected the wicket, which played - splendidly: Carter missed Rhodes at 28. Hardstaff had' made four when he was badly missed by Blytlio, and both chances were off Cotter. Hardstaff at 17 lifted McCartney high to - tho bowler, but. he dropped an easy 1 ono in a childish manner. Johnson with a beautiful- ball got Rhodes’ offstump just as he got his half-century. Crawford, the newcomer, opened his score by sending the leather clean into the shillin’ - stand for six, but his Rtav was only brief. Hardstaff-reach-ed for an hour’s Batting, hitting with the utmost freedom With 71 to his credit ho mishit McCartney, Waddy effecting a catch. missed off McCartney’s next ball by V Johnson. Tho fielding of the home team was of ail inferior character with the exception of Waddy, who fielded brilliantly. ' ■ New South Wales wero all out in the second innings for 96, the Englishmen thus winning by 498 runs. Trumper opened with a fourer, following it up with a brace., and then tipped one of Feilder’s fast ones into Bra«hd’s hands in tho slips, thus ending his career. New- South Wales had consoled itself that the .deplorable display in the first innings was' ono ol •those fillings which occasionally happen to the best of teams; but the opening of the second innings dispelled doubts on the point. The English team with batsmen’s reputations wore siow bowlers. Their two innings on a splendid wicket did not show them tip brilliantly as batsmen, but the bowling talent came out excellently strong. Fielder’s off theory was rapidly fatal. The homo team’s _ old veterans like Trumper and Noblo could not leave the off stuff alone, and speedily fell victims. Diamond, Waddy, and Hopkins followed suit, Fielders’ average at the time standing at four for 16. Duff had a life when Phe total was at 27, Braund dropping «. ball;; but when Crawford relieved 'Barnes his second hall settled Duff, and his third was fatal to Blaxland. The crowd became hilarious at the downfall of tlicif own men. Somo enthusiasm was aroused by potter, who went for the bowling/ while MeCartney kept his wicket up. The fast bowler had a couple of dozen to liis credit when he was given a couple of lives. Ho continued to belt Braund and Crawford to the boundary in rapid succession, scoring 49 in 33 minutes. He then lifted Blytho to Fane, fielder with successive halls „ot Carter and Johnson. Scores:— * NEW SOUTH WALES—2nd Innings.
