At- South Melbourne to-day an exhaustive trial of the Aloor-e-Heskett process for the direct production of iron and steel was made with entirely satisfactory results before a large gathering of experts from all parts of the Commonwealth. From Sydney a party of 25 interested in the mineral industry came to view the demonstration. Amongst those present were Air De-akin, Count Mormer (representing the Swedish Government), Schauman (representative of the Belgian Government), Major Hughes (American steel interests), Colonel Stanley (of the Armstrong-Whit-worth Co.), Air. Newbiggin (of Vickers, Son, and Alaxim), Mir. Hernan (representing tlie Commonwealth and New Zealand interests in the process), many members of the- Federal Parliament and State Parliament, and others. Air. Heskett, inventor of tlie process, was connected with work at Onehunga a quarter of a century back when efforts were made to deal with Now Zealand ifonsand. He then conceived the first -idea of the direct process which culminated in to-day’s demonstration. Although there are several direct processes of making steel all labor under the defect of expense. It is claimed that the new process reduces the cost of the indirect method by 25 per cent-.
