AN IMPORTANT INVENTION.

At- South Melbourne to-day an exhaustive trial of the Aloor-e-Heskett process for the direct production of iron and steel was made with entirely satisfactory results before a large gathering of experts from all parts of the Commonwealth. From Sydney a party of 25 interested in the mineral industry came to view the demonstration. Amongst those present were Air De-akin, Count Mormer (representing the Swedish Government), Schauman (representative of the Belgian Government), Major Hughes (American steel interests), Colonel Stanley (of the Armstrong-Whit-worth Co.), Air. Newbiggin (of Vickers, Son, and Alaxim), Mir. Hernan (representing tlie Commonwealth and New Zealand interests in the process), many members of the- Federal Parliament and State Parliament, and others. Air. Heskett, inventor of tlie process, was connected with work at Onehunga a quarter of a century back when efforts were made to deal with Now Zealand ifonsand. He then conceived the first -idea of the direct process which culminated in to-day’s demonstration. Although there are several direct processes of making steel all labor under the defect of expense.
