FATAL TERMINATION TO AN OPERATION.

MAN SUCCUMBS UNDER CHLOROFORM. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 17. A patient named James Robertson died under chloroform at the hospital on Friday night. Robertson, who was ‘a middle-aged man, was admitted to the hospital suffering from an internal obstruction, and an operation was commenced shortly after ten o’clock. The anaesthetic was admin-, istered in the usual way, and the operation proceeded successfully and was almost finished when the patient’s heart fluttered and stopped. Efforts to restore the heart’s action proved unavailing. At an inquest held last night a verdict was returned that death was due to shock following on'the operation.
