PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT
(Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, November 11. Tliero is a good deal of growling amongst members as to tho amount of money proposed to bo voted for roads in tlieir different districts. It is also pointed out that a considerable sum of money, to bo voted is simply what- was not spout last year. In other cases tho liability at March 31st last rivas equal, or nearly equal, to tho amounts it is now proposed to vote. In other words, in these particular cases, though a vote is taken there will (be little or nothingto spend. Ouo member has heen busy taking out figures to show that the differential treatment of Otago in the matter of .railways as compared with the West Coast)' lias, during tho past three years, been anything but fair. Most people, however, who are not concerned- .about vote-catching will agreo that in view of tho present economic situation, the Treasurer has done well to keep expenditure within reasonable limits. In commercial, agricultural, and official circles one hears it frequently stated that even at. present we aro borrowing atl a rato not warranted by tho capacity of our population, and that what the country really wants is a forward immigration policy.
