Press Association. . CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 6. The Canterbury A. and P. Association Metropolitan Show opened today in dull weather. The implements and machinery, New Zealand manufactures, and carriages were judged to-day, and the fencing competition was held in. the afternoon. To-mor-row the draught horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dairy produeo, and preserevd meats' will be judged. llie light horses, tradesmen’s carts, and sheep dogs will bo reserved for Friday. There was only a a small display of implements to-clay, hhc exlii'bits totalling 108 against 471 last year. Traction and oil‘engines are principally in evidence, but one of the most interesting features of the section is the milking machines shown in operation. Nearly seventy vehicles were .entered in the carriage class, the •exhibits including drays, lorries, stawaj ‘Whitechapel carts, -carts, gigs, and pony carts. Large numbers of sheep were placed in the pens near the railway siding to-day, ready to bo taken to tlio competition pons" behind tlio pavilion. It is ■agreed that they displu.v exceptionally good condition, and it is expected that the sheep will he well up to the standard. Cattle and horses will bo taken on to the grounds to-morrow in time to be judged. North Island breeders are practically unrepresented this year in any class of stock, and the display in this respect will depend entirely upon Canterbury. Lady Plunket will visit the Show on Friday, “people’s day.”
