MATAWIIERO STOCK SALES. A LARGE YARDING AND GOOD PRICES, At Matawhero yesterday there was again a largo entry of sheep and cattle, and tho public attended, dll good numbers. Generally speaking, prices were maintained at a satisfactory level. .Owing to tlio fact that both Messrs. Bright and Wyllio were required as witnesses in tho Aral Land Assessment case, the various lots were despatched with unusual expedition,uud in consequence tho sale "concluded Shortly after 3 o’clock.
The yarding of sheep totalled about 9000, consisting chiefly of hoggets and dry owes. There were a few pens of wethers, and these- sold readily at about late rates, but there "were practically no thoroughly prime lots. * Old ewes scarcely maintained recent values, hut hoggets were keenly competed for, and graders desiring to stock up had to ray high rates. Tlio first lambs of the season to bo sold apart from ihei.r mothers were offered. They vere well developed, but no-t thormglhly fat, ami brought up to 12s. The range of prices w»is: —Fat vothers 15s (shorn) to 225, prime hut >wes IBs 6d to 20s, medium 17s 4.d to ißs, stores 13s 6d to 15s 9d, ewes md lambs 12s 3d to 27s Od, prime fat hoggets IBs to 19s 7d, medium 16s to 17s, culls 14s lid to 15s 9d. The following are the principal Wethers: 61 at 225, 282 at 20s, 21 at 20s, 25 (shorn) 15s. Ewes: 22 at 20s, 15 at 19s 4d, 36 at 19s 3d, 76 at 19s 3d, 131 at 18s Bd, 127 at 18s, 48 at 18s, 92 at 17s 3d, 31 at 17s 4d, 5 at 17s, 16 at 16s 3d, 22 at 15s 9d, 85 at 14s 7d, 24 at 14s 6d, 19 at 13s 9d, 26 at 13s Bd, 97 at 13s 6<l. Ewes and lambs: 74 at 27s Gd, 101 at 25s 3d, 93 at 24s Gd, 8 at 225, 183 at 20s, 12 at 20, 5, 86 at 17s Gd, 5 a.t 16s, 46 at 12s 3d. ■Hoggets: 71 at 19s 7d, 338 at 18s 2d, 129 at 18s 2d, 20 at 17s 3d, 510 at 17s, 87 at lGs lOd, 223 at 16s fid, 181 at 16s 6d, 100 ait 16s, 64 at 15s lid, 297 at 15s 9d, 100 at 14s lid, 23 at 10s Gd. CATTLE.
Nearly 1000 head of cattle were offered, * including a magnificent line of Hereford heifers, numbering 300, ■.vliich had come forward from Messrs. Bloomfield" Brothers’ Te-hau-o-te Atua property. These were generally admired, but could not be said to have realised outside values in being sold at prices ranging from £3 15s to £3 18s 6d. .Other young ■stuff sold really well, but dairy cows .vere again somewhat difficult to quit. 11l beef lots the chief feature was a very prime lot of Shorthorns sent forward by Mr. H. D. Buchanan, of Wiairere. There were 25 of them, and the quality was extremely choice. As it happened butchers appeared to have overstocked for Show week, and the line was passed it a notion, but subsequently chang'd hinds privately a't £8 10s pelhead. The range of prices was:-—-Fat cattle : Steers £4 9s to £8 10s, cows £4 to £6, stores (steers) 30s to £3 17s 6d, cows £2 5s to £3 10s, heifers 27s to £3 18s. Tho following are the principal sales: —Steers: 25 at £8 10's. 2 at £7, 13 at £4 9s. 2 at £4 2s Gd, 12 at £3 os, 4 at £2 17s Gd, 3 at £2 15s, 7 at £2, 4 at £1 10s. Cows: 1 at £6, 4 at £5 10s, 3 at £5, 2 at £4 17s Gd, 2 at £4 15s. 6 at £3 os. 8 at £2 19s, 5 at £2. •Heifers: 100 at £3 18s (kl, 50 at £3 10s, 150 at £3 15s, 1 ‘pringiug at £5. 2 at- £3 14s Gd, 6 at £2 2s, 3 at 30s. Cows and calves: 4 at £4 Lis, 3 at £2 17s Gd, 6 >at £3 2s Gd. Calves: 34 at- £2, 7 at £2, 23 at 375. Pigs: No entries. Horses: One or toyo saddle and harness sorts were offered, but did not elicit a bid.

The Colonial Consignment 'and Distributing Co., Limited, London, to-day cabled the following report •on tho frozen meat market: —“Today’s quotations -are: —(Mutton, Canterbury 33d. At tlio tallow sales 1800 casks were offered and 500 sold. Mutton (fine) is at 36s 3d, medium 32s 6d, beef (fine) 355, medium 335. A RECORD PRICE FOR WOOL. (Received Oct. 31, 11.53 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 31. At tho wool sales the record price of 171 d was obtained for greasies. MELBOURNE, Oct. 31. At tlio sale hides had good competition. There were moderate supplies, and prices are unchanged.
