ANIMALS PROTECTION BILL.
Press Association. AVELLINGTON. Oct. 24. In tlio Legislative Council last night tlio Animals Protection BiH was further considered in committee. The amendment moved by Air. Jenkinson to permit the shooting of game after 4 a.m. instead of after 6 a.lll. as provided in tho Bill was defeated. At clause 8 Mr. Jenkinson moved an amendment to strike out certain words which would have had the effect of ‘killing the Bill, inasmuch as the clause provides for the issue of licenses. He said the acclimatisation societies were being given rights over the whole of New Zealand. He would go as far as any person in protecting game, but he felt very strongly that the license fee should he abolished. There should he 110 “preference to unionists” in connection with sport-. Air. Jones said that sport was often brutal, and bo did not sympathise with it. At the same time he would support the clause, which simpiy meant that sportsmen must pay for their sport. The Attorney-General said that by far the greater number of licenseholders in the AA’ellington district were working men and mechanics. They were quite able to pay a license fee. Tlio clause was retained on the voices.

Clause 10 fixes the amount of license fee at £l. Air. Jenkinson moved to reduce the fee to 10s. The amendment was under discus■<■oll when progress was reported, and the Council rose.
