The Alakaraka racecourse presented an aniniated appearance yesterday, on the occasion of the opening day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s spring meeting. The weather, which in the morning was very threatening, fortunately kept fine, and a record attendance resulted, it being estimated that there were upwards of 3000 people on the ground. This number included an exceptional number of ladies, whose varied costumes lent an additional brightness to the scene. Tlio racing on the whole was very interesting, and large fields wore the order of the day. The new starting machine was in evidence, and gave entire satisfaction, being a great improvement on tho old style, and in the hands of Air. Piper the itarting, which is so important, especially in tho short races, left nothing 'to be desired. Several close finishes resulted, and the liandicapper, Air. .J. Chadwick, who was pre‘ent, had every reason to he proud of his adjustment of the weights, fhe general arrangemnts were in the hands of the secretary, Mr. D, It. OeCosta, who carried them out in liis isual proficient manner. The club is to be congratulated on their enterprise in the direction of tlio various improvements; The stewards were called together on a collide of occasions through the day to consider a couple of protests, hut on enquiry they found that the alleged interfornne'e was not intentional, and consequently dismissed the appeals. Tot--I,lisator investments for the day ’.mounted to £7342, as against £5494 For the corresponding day of last year, being an increase of £IB4B. Mrs Erskine was in charge of the catering, and the fare provided was lone ample justice to by the large attendance. Tho following are the details of the racing:—
