CHRISTCHURCH Citv ,ne< i t ;v° the Christchurch Cu.v Council the following motion was carried: ‘This Council considers that fire prevention can be equally effective and more economically managed °y Die City Council, and respectfully requests tlie Government to exempt Christchurch from establishing a Fire Board. It was also resolved on the recommendation of a special committee to abandon tlie Waima’kariri wa-ter-power scheme in the meantime. The deadlock between tlie Homo Industries Committee of the Exhibition and tlie office authorities regarding tho literary competition has come to a head. The committee had been informed that it could not have the book containing the cyphers that would enable it to ascertain the prize-winners in the competition in accordance with the judge’s awards. Yesterday, however, Mr. AA ? . M Inson, chairman of tlie committee, re-, ceived advice from the Minister in charge that all tlie books necessary should be handed to the' committee. This has been done, and the committee, which vvill meet to-day, will probably aiuiounce the result immediately-
Fanny Sclmlters, licensee of tho AA hite Swan Hotel, was lined 10s and costs for a technical breach of tho Licensing Act in having .a bar open shortly after 10 p.m. on October 15. The barman had some difficulty in getting men out of the bar, and this delayed closing.

The eighth annual conference of the New Zealand Federated Builders and Contractors’ Industrial Association opened to-day, delegates being present from all parts of the colony. In the absence from town of the A favor. a warm welcome wr.s extended by Air. AV. AYard, president of the local union, and acknowledged by Alessrs Clarke, Auckland, and Bain, Invercargill. The delegates will ho entertained at a banquet to-morrow night. The Conference resolved that all apprentices should be, employed by agreement, and that all associations endeavor to obtain the principle being included in future awards. Where facilities are provided by" technical schools any boy apprenticed to a master builder shall during two yeafs of his apprenticeship attend at least two nights a week classes in . carpentry and joinery, fees to be paid by the master; that improvers bo bound by agreement and paid at the same rate as apprentices. Of four deaths in the Old People’s Home during the past four weeks, three were aged respectively 93, 93, and 97.
(Henry Toon, a youth of about 17, who at Palmtua ple-ulcd guilty to a charge of forgery and uttering, was before Judge Button for sentence today. Counsel for accused said that though accused’s father was a bankrupt. he would endeavor to. raise £l2 10s. the amount involved in the ■forgery.
