FIRE BRIGADES BILL.

Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. IS

'The Eire Brigades Bill was exhaustively dismissed by a deputation which waited upon the Attorney-Gen-eral to-day. Mr. Mislop, Mayor of Wellington, pointed out that the Municipal Conference condemned the establishment of Fire Boards as a retrograde step, involving as it did the turther cutting-up ol the powers. of local government. He hoped Wellington would be left out of the operation of the Act. As far as the present Bill was concerned, it was considered the power conferred on Fire Boards to borrow should be under tho control of the Minister and municipality. "With regard to the exchange of properties the Wellington Council thought all such transactions should bo subject to the consent of the local authority. In his reply, Hr. Findlay said the sole desire of the Government in introducing the Bill was to have increased efliciency of brigades. If the measure did not serve that purpose then it should go. Ho was sure the Government was still prepared to consider whether some scheme should not be adopted making the operations of the Bill optional ,or on tho other hand, to repeal it altogether. Ho would attempt to put in tho Bill, with the sanction of his colleagues, a clause providing that where, the City Council passed a resolution asking to be relieved of the operation of the Act the statute should be inoperative as far as that particular municipality was concerned. The deputation seemed to forget that tho scheme of the Bill was to put only a portion of the cost of firo prevention on the municipalities. Under tlio Bill they would have to pay less than half He was prepared to suggest to lus colleagues some such system as that eonFained in the Advances to Settlers Act. regarding sinking funds, which should he embodied in the Bill. Begnriling Government representation on the Boards he said, “We will withdraw our representative. the Government only desires to have an impartial man sitting on the Board.
