GOVERNMENT LAND PROPOSALS.
(Special to Times)
WELLINGTON, October .18. There seems to be no finality in regard to tlio Government’s ideas on the land question. Another surprise was sprung upon members last night when the Minister for Lamlsbrought down the proposed amendment to clause 66. Tlie proposed amendment is meeting with very strenuous opposition. It is contended that tho present provision will very largely increase the revenue because land owners will have to keep up. their valuations to tlio highest point in view of the fact that tlieir land may be taken compulsorily by the Government. Even tho small settlor, it is contended, will not be safe because under clause 69 of tlie bill. Mr. McNab’s new provision will apply to every landowner within, fifteen miles of any borough. It is contended by some, also, that the new provision will affect local rates, though Mr McNab says not. However, if it does not there will need to bo tlie absurdity of two valua- ■ tion rolls oho for taxes and one for rates. Mr Massey lias moved an amendment to Mr. McNab s new proposition and this is now being discussed at considerable length and occasionally with some warmth.
