ABUSE OF THE TOTE
MENTIONED IN PARLIAMENT

WELLINGTON. October 16. In replying to-day to Mr. Poole’s question regarding the continued use, by the W'rilington Racing Club of double totalisators, and tbe practice of receiving outside investments, tbe Premier said the Bill dealing with gambling, which provided for the stopping of the use of the double totes would be circulated next week. jlr. Poole said the sooner the Bill was passed the better it would bo for tbe public. It seemed that whilst a man who received commissions at a tote shop was hauled bofore the Court and fined, a Racing Club could do the same thing in another way with impunity. Ho referred to the advertisement which has been inserted by the AAellington Racing Club in a South paper, in which is was stated that money for 'investment at the meeting would be received by telegram at its office tor investment up to within an hour and a half of tho time of the starting ot a race. This was nothing short ot a tote shop, and the use of the double tote was also advertised. He nail understood that it had been agreed by tlio representatives of Racing Clubs some time ago to abolish the doubio tote. Mr. Henries: Oh, no! . . Mr. Poole said that some clubs bat abolished the double tote. It bad come to bis knowledge, that bearing that the new Bill was not likely to pass this session tbe "W ellington Racing Club bad decided to go the whole liog, and get all the money they could before wo can get at them again. . , , ~ Sir Joseph A\ ard said -bat- tbe Wellington Racing Club bad no authority for assuming that tlio Bill was not going to come up tins year. The Government proposed to go on with the Bill and with tlio assistance of members they hoped to put it through this session. It was proposed to abolish tho double tote and also deal with the matter ol transmission of telegrams to.
