AIATAAVHERO SALES

A LARGE ENTRY AND LOAVER PRICES.

The fortnightly sale of stock was held at Atatawhero yesterday, when the weather was fine, and there was a large attendance of 'buyers and others interested. The entry of sheep was very large, totalling about 16,000, a result that was probably due in part to the tempting prices jvhicli ruled at the former sale. Another contributing factor was that as lambing is now completed farmers are able to get -amongst their flocks more freely to draft out the dry ewes. There was disappointment in store for those who anticipated the high prices of a fortnight back. Owing to the values of fat sheep in Auckland having receded about os per head, the temporary demand from that quarter ceased, and from its former excited condition the.market yesterday went back to something iiko a normal state. This meant a drop of about 3s per head as compared wit-li the rates of the last sale. Even at tlio reduced prices it was difficult to quit the largo yarding, and after butchers’ requirements were filled numerous lots were passed unsold.

There were many pens of ewes with lambs, but even where the lambs were well grown and the ewes in good condition the highest price obtainable was from 2os to 265, which is considerably below the previous market rates.

Hoggets maintained their values better than any other class, and several lines of culls sold extremely well. The range of prices was:—Prime fat wethers 18s Gel to 22s 6d, medium 16s to 17s 6d.
