AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
PROBABLE EFFECT IN 'BRITAIN
Jnited Press Association —Copyright (Received Oct. 14, 9.47 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 14. The Tariff Commission lias published an elaborate analysis of the new Australian tariff. It considers that while .it will probably cause the transference of trade from foreign countries to the United Kingdom .and affect the relative proportion of the different branches of British exports to Australia, it is unlikely to diminish, and may increase, the total volume of exports. The Commission emphasises that under the previous tariffs the British share of Australian import trade steadily diminished. Division was necessary in the interests of Australian revenue. The estimated value of Australian imports placed on the United Kingdom’s free List is at least three millions, and of those placed on the general free list at least seven millions. There still remains a large value of imports to which preference can be applied.
PROMISES FULFILLED
(Received Oct. 14, 11.48 n.m.) LONDON, Oct. 14
The'“Morning Post” says the Tariff Commission’s cokl, clear analysis -shows that preference gives the Motherland -at least as great an advantage as the authors of the tariff led us to expect.
