THE CIVIL SERVICE.
INADEQUATELY’ PAID PUBLIC SERVANTS. Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 8. The life of a Civil servant is not always the loitus-eatinlg existence it is sometimes supposed to be. There are Civil servants who work .very hard indeed, and are not receiving princely salaries for it, either. Recent inquiries instituted amongst the railway servants showed that men who are responsible Government officers are working very long hours for utterly inadequate remuneration, and these inquiries have been followed up by an investigation into the conditions of service in the Post and Telegraph Department. An exhaustive review t>f the position in this connection is giveni in the “Herald.” While the hours of work have been arranged reasonably this year there was found to be geneml complaint with reference to the salaries, and innumerable instances were quoted by the officers interviewed of postal servants after long and faithful service being sitill kept on the smallest possible salaries.
