Major Bamfield, who for 22 years

was secretary of the South Canterbury Education Board, but retired ■two years ago on superannuation, died on Friday night. Deceased was a na.tivo of Falmouth. Ho was educated for the Army in 1857, and served with the 72nd Higlilanderß in India under General Roberts, taking part in the capture of Rotali and numerous other battles. After nutting in 23 yea re’ active service lie came to New Zealand in 1875, first going info business in Christchurch, and then coming to Timaru as secretary to the Education and High School Board.
