AUCKLAND’S SHIPPING

MORE ACCOMMODATION WANTED. TWO VESSELS DELAYED. Press Association. AUCKLAND. Oct. 1. The congestion of shipping at tho wharves is becoming more marked every day. Several steamers with large cargoes have arrived, but owing to the accommodation boing taken up they will remain idle for a day or two until room can be found in tho sheds for their freight. Tho Union Co.’s steamer Mokoia arrived from Sydney early this morning, and commenced'- discharging her cargo, amounting to 1000 tons, at Hobson street wharf. Tho island trader Hnurolo had already landed a considerable quantity of fruit on the wharf, and with the cargo coming out of the Mokoia expeditious uuloadiiig was soon found to bo impracticable. As rapidly as possible cargo is being removed from tho wharf, but with the relief thus afforded the cougestion continues, and as a consequence the departure of the Mokoia for southern ports has been further postponed until ten o’clock to-morrow night. Tho necessity that exists forjirovitL ing additional accommodation was brought up at tho Harbor Board meeting this afternoon. The traffic manager (Air. Burgess) reported that there were now two vessels, the Wan aka with 2600 tons at the wharf and the Whakarua with 4000 tons in tho stream, which could

not be provided with sheds for their cargo, and lie feared this was only the beginning of the troublo through want of accommodation in tho port. Every available berth was in use, and the Whakarua would require to remain in the stream till Thursday afternoon or perhaps Friday forenoon before she could bo berthed.

Air. W. J. Napier, who dwelt upon the need for increasing the accommodation, said it was most probable that Auckland would bo made the terminus of either the All-Red, Sail Francisco, or Tehuantepec (Alexico) routes in the near future. The whole matter was referred to the Board in committee, various suggestions being made for increased facilities for shipping.
