SPORTS AND PASTIMES.
CRICKET. , A match has been arranged between the Union and Te Ran clubs, as a preliminary contest in which to test tlio strength of their respective elevens, and also to get some idoa_of how the opposition are shaping. ' Two good teams have been selected, and, judging by the interest taken in cricket generally, the coming season promises to be a very successful one. The Te Rail team will bo selected from the following: Dr. Collins, J. H. Wack, W. H. Wack, Hooper, Melville, Sim, Olsen, Pine, Ellison, Orpwood, Oliver, W. Pollock, Laver and Monk ; Union : Lang, Armstrong, Grant, Gibson (2), Emanuel,. O’Halloran-, Griffiths, Coleman, Miller, and Slieerin: emergencies, B. Bright and J. Pollock. The following Te Ran players are requested to attend for practice nt the Victoria Domain on Saturday afternoon: Dr. Collins, Barnby. Baxter, Cary, Olsen, Pine, Dudfield, W. Pollock, Schofield, Oliver, Storey, Houltlmm, Ellison', Orpwood, and Reynolds.
TARUHERU CLUB
A representative general meeting of the above clnb was held in the Tanihorii library on Monday, when the following officers were elected for the ensuing season :—President. A Dewing Esq., Vice-Presidents, Messrs. C. R. Neal, J. Wallace, Johnson, (Maknrakn), G. Arnold (Alntawhoro), J. Burke, Spragg, J. Williamson, A. H. Hodge, J. Russell, Hines, A. Kinnimont, and Sherratt; lion, see., F T. Knight: treasurer, F. Pilcher; auditor, H. E. Clarke: captain, C. A. Fenwick: vice-captain C. Lasher; comimttee, Messrs. T. Sharpe, J. Aluir, A. Wilkins, C. Lasher, Geo. Mathieson, F. Pilcher, and A Young; selection committee, Messrs A. Young Mathieson and Dobson; delegates to associations, Messrs. Movers, Charles and Knight. The subscription was fixed at 5s per member. The secretary was requested to write to the Wanderers club asking them if it would be convenient for them to open the season with a friendly match on Saturday next, on the Taruhoru ground. After the meeting those present unanimously decided to hold a social in the Taruheru reading room on Labor Day in aid of the cricket club funds.
BOWLING
The Gisborne Bowling Club will officially open the season on Thursday of next week. An advertisement regarding the function appears elsewhere e TEAMS FOR AUSTRALIA. Press Association. In reference to the telegram from Auckland re the probable sending oi a Dominion team of bowlers to Australia, it should be stated that it has been already privately arranged to send a team of a I Mint 30 leading'players representing Christchurch, ' Wellington, Wainiate, Oamaru, Dunedin, Gore, and Invercargill, to Victoria and New South Wales next April.
GOLF
The ladies’ cleek competition ».-! played yesterday on the golf links, the prize, a cleek presented by Mr. C. A. Fenwick, being annexed by Mrs. A. 'W. Rees, who performed the round in the small score of 80. Mrs Rees has been playing very consistently during the past season, and hei success in this competition marks her as a player likely to achieve further dictinction. Mrs. Morgan made the round in 88, Mrs. O’Meara in 91, and Miss Sweet and Mrs. Cole in 92. The following are the scores and handicaps:—Mrs. A. W. Webb, the champion sculler, who arrived from the North Island today, stated that the match with Tressider for the championship of the world would be rowed on the Wanganui river in February next.
