At n meeting of tho Master Bakers’ Association to-night, it was decided to increase the price of bread from 6Jd to 7d per 41b loaf as from tomorrow.
Tho body of Thomas Welker, who was drowned while going ashore from tho Enterprise dredge at Alexandra on Thursday, was recovered to-day, being dredged up in the buckets of tlio Alanuherikia dredge.
AUCKLAND, Sept.^3o. At to-night’s meeting of ,t!ie City Council it was decided to seek tho authority of tlio ratepayers for the raising of a loan of £50,000 for the extension of the electric light and power service. It was also decided to cable to Air. T. Alidgeley Taylor, the well-known sanitary expert of London, inviting liim to come to Auckland and report upon a drainage scheme. Ho will arrive about June next, and the cost of liis visit is estimated at £2BOO.
CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 30. The angling season will open tomorrow, and judging by tho number of licenses issued by the Christchurch Acclimatisation Society tlio sport here this season promises to bo a most popular one. A large proportion of the licenses have been issued to youths. A.IASTERTON, Sept, 30. There were no bankruptcies in AVairarapa during the month of September. There have been no cases since July last.'
Air. R, Brown, for thirty years Town Clerk, retired from the service of tho borough to-day. Air. W. T. Mansfiold, appointed acting-Town Clerk, commences his duties to-mor-row.
_ NEAV PLYMOUTH, Sept, 30. The filming of the grand jury in the tarring and feathering case occasioned considerable surprise. A verdict of guilty from the common jury had been generally anticipated, but the’ throwing-out of the bill by the grand jury was altogether unanticipated.
The price of mutton and bread has been increased from to-day.. Tlio butchers .to-night decided to cease the system of hawking meat in carts. NAPIER, Sept. 30. At tho Supreme Court to-day a verdict for defendant was given in a civil case _Geo. Beatty v. Robt. AVatson, a claim for specific performance of an agreement to sell land. The defence was that there was no written undertaking or agreement to sell.
