NUMBER OF SHEEP IN THE COLONY.

(Special to Times.) AVELLINGTIN, Sept. 17. An interim return of the number of sheep in the colony on 30tli April shows the total for the North Island to be 10,854,000, and for the South Island 10,129,000. The net increases for the year were:—North Island 844,287, South Island 31,014. The decrease in tiie Ashburton comity, South Island, was 104,413. There were also decreases in several other counties in Canterbury and Otago. The number of sheep-owners and sheep in the different districts are as follows:—Auckland, 2127 owners, 785,710 sheep; Napier and Gisborne, 2219 owners, 5,119,901 sheep; AA Tellington and West Coast, 4323 owners, 4,948,407 sheep; Marlborough and Nelson. 2002 owners. 1,122,440 sheep; Canterbury and Kaikoura, 4713 owner s," 5,147,340 sheen; O'tago, 4593 owners, 3,859,974 sheep. Totals for the colony, 19,977' - owners, 20,983,772 sheep. -
