Another clause was proposed to make the duty of Id per lb on sugar apply to the Cook Islands, and to impose a duty of 10 per cent ad valorem on cotton and linen piece goods imported into tlie islands after 31st December, 1907. Mr. Massey said this clause was wrong in principle, and lie was opposed to it. Mr. Millar said the Cook Islands were asked to collect this duty.' The two chief items on which the islands collected duty were swept away by tlio tariff, and they had to derive revenue somewhere in order to carry Oil. The clause was carried by 42 to. 13. The Minister moved another clause providing that raw cotton should be free if imported ..under a valid contract made,before January Ist. Mr. James Allen moved to substitute June for January.—Negatived by 30 to 17. Another clause moved by the Minister provided that nothing ill sections 26, 27, and 28 shall apply to goods delivered in pursuance or bona fide contracts made between purchaser and ' importer in business in New Zealand unless tlio importer act's as agent for some other person.—Agreed to. The resolutions agreed to in Coinmittee of Ways and Means were included in the Bill, which was then reported. The House adjourned at 1.30 a.lll.
