Sept. 14. ; A deputation from Ohinemuri Couny Council and Thames Valley settlors waited on the Premier to urge the need for a remedy m regard to the present position of affairs in Ohinemuri, consequent upon the silting up of the rivers through mining tailings being run into them. The Premier said as soon as the roport of the Mines Committee was received he would give it earnest consideration. He fully recognised the importance of the matter, and sincerely sympathised with the settlers m their losses. BLENHEIM, Sept. 14. A five-roomed house at Redwoodtown was destroyed by fire this morning. The occupants, J. Porter and . family, had a narrow escape. The ' furniture, three bicycles, and two <runs, wero insured m tne Standard for £153. The house was insured in the Commercial office for £l5O. John Greig met his death in a mysterious manner at Kaikoura on Thursday morning. He was found in a tent kneeling in a pool of blood, quite dead. There are no particulars. •A man named H. Campbell was drowned at Portage, Queen Charlotte Sound, yesterday. ASHBURTON, Sept. 14. Whilo working at a planing machine in one of the local sawmills a youth named Robert Brooms, a recent arrival in the colony, had his left'arm taken off below the elbow.
AUCKLAND, Sopt. 14. ' The Tairua Broken Hills Mine obtained bullion worth £1685 from 322 tons of ore. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 14. During the past mouth there has been a remarkable prevalence of criminal offences "by young married women. In one case a woman admitted a charge of forgery. To-day Mr. Bishop, S.M., dealt with a case of theft by a young women of goods from a shop. The woman appeared ill Court well dressed and showing every indication of being well-to-do. She said her mother had taught her to drink, and while drunk the offence had been committed. Her husband was ready to pay tho value of the goods stolen. The Magistrate remarked on the alarming increase of thefts by married women, who came to the Court and confessed, pleading
