According to the newspaper Englishmin .the deportation of the agitator Laj Patria was due to officers informing their colonels that the troops locally were doubtful if ho was allowed to continue his speeches, and unless the Punjab Land Colonies Bill was vetoed. The Government was unwilling to .veto the Bill, but Lord Kitchener insisted. The sentence of half a year’s imprisonment passed on the Calcutta extremist .leader, Bepin Chandra, caused prolonged disorder in the streets, the crowd .attacking the police and also hissing the chief presiding magistrate. BENGAL, September 13. There have been numerous assaults on Europeans in Eastern Bengal. Hundreds witnessed an assault, yet the police were unable to secure cii(lbiicc. BRISBANE, September 14. While a watchman was going the rounds at the Queensland National Bank he discovered a man hiding in the hank. The latter seized the watchman, but after a struggle the watchman got his revolver free and shot the intruder in the temple. He was taken to the hospital.
