CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

Press Association. NAPIER. Sept. 15. At tbo New Zealand Golf Chib’s ■chatnpionship meeting, which was continued on Saturday, tbo chief interest centred in the semi-final round Of the amateur championship ot New

Zealand, which was playod in the afternoon. In the round botweon Lusk and Bamford, the lattor evidently nervous, and Lusk, getting awav at tho start, maintained his lead^throughout. Tho round was not a vorv interesting one. When -\i thur Duncan and C. Sniitli took places tliero was a small Umll ol «• oitenient amongst tlio spoctiv m o sec how the latter would shape "M 1 , inst his redoubtable opponent. Smith himself was mamfestly nervous, and at tho start played below his to m, and lost his first four liol<«. Ho 1 non pulled himself together aild JiMvcd tlio next three holes, and won the two following holes m good style. J hen one hole was halved. Duncan got.the noxt two, then Smith one. Duncan one, and the fifteenth was halved, this leaving Duncan five up and three to play. Had Smith played from tlio start as he did towards the latter part of the round it would have been a really good game. As showing Duncan’s great consistency, it may bo mentioned that ho did the first nine holes in 38, this being proportionately equal to ids record-breaking score. Tho contest in the fourth round was between tlio brothers Arthur and Ken. Duncan, in which the tormei played brilliantly, making only Olio bad stroke, wbicli, hdwever, did not affect his score. An incident is 10c <,|led when the same two brothers met in the final of the championship in Auckland in 1905. Both were plaving carefully and well, and noitlier had obtained a load of more than two up at the 17tli hole. Ken. made tho score all square and the greatest) excitement prevailed when the last hole was playod. Both got in good drives, but in the approach Arthur went wide. Luckily for lum the ball struck an adjacent tree and landed oil tlio green. Ken was on the green with the same numbor ot strokes, but Arthur beat him in the putt. To loso his championship by one putt was tho consistent Ken’ experience, while his opponent was considered to have a lucky win. Since then Arthur has improved out of all knowledge, and when playing up to his form can easily' dispose of his brother. At this tournament he stands out on his own, and it is contended by many that liis play is unequalled in the colony. Following are tlio details ot tho day’s play:— . , T Amateur Championship ot New Zealand: Semi-final —H. B. Lusk beat H. D. Bamford, 4 up and 3 to play ; A. D. Duncan beat 11. C.
