No. 1 squad, under Sergt. Scott, proved altogether too good for the remaining squads of the Gisborne Rifles, in connection with a competition for efficiency and attendance. The system of marks drawn up by the officers is very thorough and comprehensive. consequently the sergeants of squads have an incentive to keep their men up to the mark in appearance, attendance, drill, and the study of the manual of instruction. No. 2 squad, under Sergt. Somervell, obtained second place, No. 4 squad, under Sergt. Taylor, third position, with No. 3 squad (Sergt. Hay) close up. Captain Reere, in announcing the result of'the first quarter’s marks last evening, congratulated Sergt Scott and his men on their creditabli record. He pointed out that men in some of the squads lost marks by not applying for leave when unable to attend parades.
