BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held Inst evening. Present: The Mayor, and Councillors Whinrny. Somervell, Sawyer, Pottie, Maun, Williams and Miller The Council’s request approved by the ratepayers, for constituting Gisborne Borough a fire district under the Fire Brigades Act, 1906, was acknowledged by Mr. Carroll, who stated that ho had referred it to tho Colonial Secretary. . Messrs F.dwin S. Goldsmith, 'l'hos. Jex Blake, Jas, Queenin, W. Reynolds. F. Reynolds and J. Sandlant signed-a,-joint letter calling attention to tie condition of the upper part of Whitaker Street, leading into Wi Pore Street, Whataupoko. They asked the Council to consider the question of forming the street.—The matetr was referred to the Engineer for report to next meeting. Mr. I. S. Samson wrote asking tiro Council to huvo expended the money voted for a road, leading to l ; s residence, Salisbury road.—Letter received ; no action taken. Mr. Chas. Adair and ten other ratepayers wrote that eight mouths ago they put in a petition to tho Councii re levelling and forming footpa-hs in front of their houses in Sheeham street. The Council, it was stated, instructed tho Engineer to get the work dono but so far it had not been touched. They akked that -e •« » ;l . lion bo put in hand.—Tt was decided to put tho work in hand at once.— The Town Clorf: Of course, the owners will be charged half the cost. Messrs G. R. Buscke, Chas Adair and ten other residents of Sheehan street, Whataupoko, asked that a lamp be erected at the corner of Whittaker and Sheehan streets. After' discussion it was agreed to erect an extra lamp at the desired site. Tho Engineer reported : Roobuck-rond Bridge: Owing to more favornble weather the contractor is making better progress, but I estimate it will be another three months before the work is finished and opened for traffic. Esplanade-road: The contractor is doing his best in the matter of metalling this road, but there is very little shingle available, so the progress is naturally somewhat slow. Waimata-road Bridge: This bridge has been finished and the road is again open for traffic. As soon as the accounts are to hand the County Council will bo debited with their proportion, as also Mr. Colenmn for his contribution of £2O. Salisbury-road: With respect to this road, I have to report that for the present the road should be formed, shingled, and a footpath made on one side from Gray-street to Robertstreet, a distance of 21 chains, shingle to bo 30ft wide and Din thick. This would cost £365. If the Council thought proper the balance of the length of the Toad, to the borough boundary, a distance of 6S chains, could be shingled for a width of 20ft and Din thick at a cost of £6OO, but in my opinion it would be advisable to make a progressive work, doing a portion this vear and the balance later on. There was considerable discussion regarding Salisbury-road, and it was agreed that the Engineer be empow- ( ered to expend £SOO on the road, the • work to be 20ft wide, and to start from the Gray-street end. Cr. Sawyer moved that the price offered for boulder stone from Sponge Bay be increased from 5s 6d to 6s : per yard.—-Carried. The committee’s report on the question of the appointment of a turncock was read, and the Mayor moved the appointment of Mr. J. Hay.—This was negatived. Cr. Somervell moved that Mr. Beveridge, whose appointment was favored by the committee, be appointed. —Cr. Miller moved fresh applications bp called at £5. —-The voting on the motion to call fresh applications . >at £5 was equal. Ayes: Crs. Miller, Whinray, Pottie, and the Mayor. Noes:’ Crs. Minn, Williams, Somervell, and Sawyer. The Mavo r gave his casting vote in favor of the motion. * •
