LIQUOR AND TARIFF QUESTIONS STIR UP INTEREST.

United Press Association —Copyright Received September 10, 9.40 p.m. SYDNEY, September 10. The weather conditions were favorable for the election, the day being fine and bright. In the Metropolitan areas the afternoon was declared a public holiday. The polling passed off quietly with little sign of excitement. All parties worked hard and liberally employed vehicles of Jill deissues at stake the antagonism of a large section of the voters to the new Federal tariff acted indirectly and the local option poll acted directly in stirring up interest in the struggle. Both these questions appealed especially to women who availed themselves more largely than ever previously of the ballot box. The liquor and no-license interests vied with each other in actively securing supporters. Received September 11, 0.30 a.m. SYDNEY, September 10. Returns are coming in slowly. Few city or suburban figures are complete. As predicted the returns have produced some surprises. Ministers Carruthers, Hogue and Wado were reelected by large majorities, also McGowan, the Labor leader. At Darling Harbor Mr. John Norton (Independent), replaces Mr. Daley (Labor). In tlie Phillip electorate Mr. Dick (Meagher (Independent; replaces Mr. Sullivan (Labor). At Waverley Mr. Onslow (Independent) was elected in place of Mr. Jessop (Ministerialist). At St. Leonard’s another Ministerial seat was lost to Mr. Clark (Independent). Labor gained a couple of seats at Balmain and Rozelle, defeating Ministerialists in both instances. At Surry Hills Mr. Crick wooed the electors with three other candidates but had to be content with third place. Mr. Graham (Ministerialist) winning the seat. Mr. Parkes (Independent) was selected in place of a Ministerialist at Canterbury. Mr. Dacey (labor) ousted Mr. Bruntnell (Ministerialist and secretary of the Now South Wales Alliance) at Alexandra. Labor gained Leichhardt and Campordown at the Government’s expense. Botany is also going to Labor. Received September 10, 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, September 10. At Wickham Mr. Graham (Labor) won tho seat from Mr. Fegan (Ministerialist). All members of tho Ministry are believed t'o be safo. Practically, the whole of tho country returns aro incomplete. The feature of the election so far is the success of Laborites and Independents in the Metropolitan areas. Incomplete returns indicate that the Government is holding its position in the country. The Metropolitan area returned 18 Ministerialists, 10 Labor, and 6 Independent. Including the country electorates, whore tho returns fairly well indicate which candidate will win, the latest figures are:—Ministerial 22, Labor 10, Independent 6. It is imnrobablo that the local option poll will be available for a day or two, but the no-license party claim that a majority o“ the electorates will be found to have voted reduction and a few nolicense, The poll on the liquor question is admittedly very heavy.
