The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 11, 1907. GISBORNE ROADS.

Tlio vexed quest-ion of metal supply again occupied a good deal of time at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening. Tho very attractive scheme presented a fortnight previously’ hv Air. G. Grant, G.E., w-a.s on this occasion backed up by a comprehensive report on the Patutalii quarry by the Borough Engineer, Air. Gibbon plainly stated “that sooner or later wo must go to Waihirero for our metal supply.” The full text of the report, published in another column, provides ample reasons for this conclusion, the chief and insurmountable one being that the supply a,t Patlitabi is too limited to be looked ujion as a permanent source. In deciding last night that a report should bo obtained from four qualified engineers as to the quality and quantity of stone at Waihirero, and tlie probable cost of quarrying it, tho Council took a forward stop in a most important matter. From the discussion that took place it is evident 'by the'local' preksnai"snmmstuft”thA municipality to a point where there is reason to hope for some definite action in place of the continual evasions that have takon place in the past. The remarks of the councillors, moreover, wero interesting, inasmuch as they revealed the characteristics of those who have been entrusted with the welfare of the town, and these can with advantage be borne in mind when the ratepayers have their next opportunity of electing a Council. In tlie meantime we may echo Councillor Pettie’s hope that the proposed investigation may show that a satisfactory supply of metal can be obtained from Waihirero at a reasonable cost. In that case, despite Counoillor Whin ray’s declaration that he does not intend to he “lioodwinked by a lot of experts,” and Councillor Somervell’s convictions of the futility of expert investigation, we confidently rely uiion the good sense of tlio majority to see that Gisborne has no longer to lieur tho stigma of being tho worst roadeil town in Now Zealand.
