CHRISTCHURCH MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

Press Association,

CHRISTCHURCH, September 9. At a meeting of the City Council to-night a letter was received from the chairman of the Canterbury College Board of Governors stating that unless the Council made a grant towards the upkeep of the Public Library the Board would either have to increase subscriptions or restrict the library hours in order to save the attendants’ wages. It was decided to reply that no grant could be made. During the same meeting the Mayor stated that Ingram and Co., organ builjle-rs, of Hereford, England, had repudiated tho contract made by their representative, Mr. Brett, to ro-erect the Exhibition organ, which had been presented to the city, in liis Majesty’s Theatre. Mr. Brett, in protest, had resigned his position with Ingram and Co. and had offered to carry out tlio work himself in accordance with the

original specifications. The question of entering into a new contract wa referred to the organ committee with power to act.

The Council to-night agreed to meet representatives of the master butchers and slaughtermen with reference to improvements at the abattoirs.
