DROWNING FATALITY AT WAIAPU.

The police have received information of a drowning fatality at Waiapu. A laborer named AVilliam Rateliford, employed by Mr. O’Ryan, County Engineer, left Port Awamii on Tuesday at 11 a.m. for Te Araroa. A few hours later Constable Mellsop, who had come from Hick’s Bay, discovered the riding horse and pack horses across the Waiapu river. The fact that the saddles and packs were saturated aroused fears for the man’s safety, and the finding of a cap in the river leaves little doubt that Rateliford was another victim to the rapacious Waiapu. already notorious for its death roll.
