The Ancient Order of Foresters, Gisborne branch, have appointed Dr. Collins as surgeon, members now having the professional services of Drs Cole and Collins. About twenty members attended the practice of McKillop’s Private Band on Monday evening, and a very good rendition of tho music to bo played,, at the Hospital Social was given. Three candidates were proposed for membership. A meeting of the ladies’ committee was held - yesterday afternoon, the Mayoress presiding, when supper arrangements for tho Hospital Social were advanced a stage. The committee would esteem it a favor if those willing to donate would drop a line to tho committee, or personally convey the intimation. Mr. Corrio Johnstone is to commence a series of addresses to-night in the Baptist Tabernaclo to be continued bn Thursday and Friday evenings, and next week he and Mr. Salter are to conduct united meetings in the Tabernacle. At the outset the subjects will be specially to help Christians.

Extensive preparations have been made for the service of song .entitled “Uncle Tom” to be given to-morrow evening in the Salvation Army Barracks by tho band and the singing company of the local corps, and a good evening’s entertainment is promised. To judge from the exceptional interest displayed in the event, the second annual social ot the Gisborne Rifles, to bo held in the Theatre tomorrow evening, will bo a very enjoyable fixture. The ' officers head the general committee, and Sergeant J. Soinorvell and Privates A. Pritchard and J. Fielder will officiate ns M.’sC. Sorgfc. J. V. Scott is carrying out the secretarial duties.

A pleasant evening is promised all who attend tho lvaiti-City Football Club’s social on Wednesday noxt, lltli inst. The occasion will bo marked by the presentation of caps and trophies to the junior team, which secured premiership honors in that division. Mr. A. Luttrell in Iron, secretary ol tho committee. The caps to bo presented to tho winning team woro donated by Mr. Segodin, and aro on view in Messrs Shierlaw and Co.’s window.

Tho Committee of tho Gisborne City Band is in communication with Mr. H. Seymour, of South Island, with reference to securing his services as bandmaster. Ho holds a similar position at prosont, and has had considerable English and Colonial experience in band and orchestral work. Mr. Seymour coached ono of tho bands for the Christchurch contest, and the committee will ho fortunate if ho accepts tho position. The matter of expense apepars to bo tho only obstacle, but it is hoped to make satisfactory arrangements.

At Monday evening’s meeting of tho Utility Poultry Club, held at Mr. O. J. Morrell’s rooms, the following were nominated as office-bearers:— For president, Messrs Rowley and Nightingale; vice-president, F. Vesper, 11. 11. Far*n, J. Brady, and G. Brown ; secretary and treasurer. O. J. .Morrell. Tho election will be held on Monday, October 7th. Nominations for the committee will bo considered at next meeting. The loss of the Haupiri’s oil launch at Port Awanui on Sunday evening was caused through swamping. When the launch was being hoisted on board, after the handling of cargo, there was a heavy swell prevailing, and this brought about the mishap. A sea struck the little vessel, causing the stern to slip from the davit hook, and the launch quickly filled and sank in deep water. Time did not permit of effective attempts towards recovering it, and though the position can be fixed, there is not much probability of finding the launch again, a strong tid© running at this point. The craft is valued at from £250 to £3OO. ,

Members of the M.U., 1.0.0. F., and A.O.F. lodges met in friendly rivalry at the Masonic Hall last night to decide the rubber in a card tolu-nament. A spirited contest was the outcome. The Foresters beat their opponents at crib by 10 games to 8, but in euchre the tables were turned most effectively, the Oddfellows being victorious by 27 to 11. Honors thus fell to the Oddfellows by 35 games to 21. The. visitors were regaled by the A.O.F brethren with a coffee supper. Felicitous little speeches by Mr W. L. File (A.0.F.) and Mr C. H. Ambridge (1.0.0. F.), and cheers for the victors and vanquished brought a pleasant gathering to a close.

A meeting of the Liberal Association was held last evening, the vicepresident occupying the chair. Routine business was transacted, and there was a discussion on the tariff and other subjects. A resolution was passed strongly supporting the request for tho establishment of a Maternity Homo in Gisborne The proposal to use portion of the rail- • way reserve (until lately held on lease by the Borough Council as a recreation ground) as a site for tho new gaol met with severe criticism, owing to tho close proximity of tho site to town, and a motion was passed urging tho Government to utiliso the cemetery reserve, Upper Childers Road, lor the gaol, its position being more suitable for tho purpose. It is expected that the survey of .tho Arai block will be completed bv December. The Chief Justice will preside at the sitting of the Compensation Court* on October 28th. Mr. Bateson is to represent the owner (tho Hon. Randell Johnson), and Air. Matthe-\v6on tho Government. Air. Janies AlcFarlano is to appear for Air. J. Clark, tho lessee, whoso Interest and date of relinquishment will _be decided by tho Court. Air. David Findlay, legal adviser to the La lid Purchase Board, will appear on behalf of tho Government, with him Air. J. AV. Nolan, Crown Solicitor at Gisborne. Tho land will ho thrown open -for selection, probably early next year. A visit to" the estate was paid yesterday by Air. Barron, Chairman of the Lind Purchase Board, and Air. Finlay.
