The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 4, 1907. A QUESTION OF PATRIOTISM.

If there is one characteristic more than another which lowers or elevates a community in the eyes of a thoughtful visitor it is the appearance of its public buildings, streets, and parks. No ono will dispute the fact that imposing buildings,, well-paved streets, intersected by avenues of frees, are not ' absolutely essential to commercial greatness, but they certainly have a very marked effect upon the lives of a city’s inhabitants. The statement which appears in another column as to what has been attempted and what remains to be done constitutes a direct appeal to tile public of Gisborne, and one that should not be allowed to pass unheeded. From almost every point of view Nature has been exceedingly kind’ to this district. Charmingly situated, and with climatic conditions that will permit of luxuriant growth, our p'eoplo have an almost unexampled opportunity of providing the city that is to bo with such surroundings as will make it the envy of all visitors, and a constant source of satisfaction to its residents. Gisborne is at present a city in tho making, and now is the time for its citizens to decide whether or not it shall be merely a place of habitation for a people .whoso only thought is money-grub-bing, or whether they shall add to commercial enterprise tho spirit of refinement and culture that are the attributes of a real civilisation. We sincerely trust that tho Gisborne Beautifying Society will receive encouragement ■of a jiraetical nature that will enable it to continue in the •good work it has taken up.
