THE NIGHTCAPS INQUIRY.
ALLEGED REMISSNESS. Press Association. INVERCARGILL, September 2. The Nightcaps Commission; sta-rted taking evidence to-day at Riverton. During the examination of Mr. Green, Inspector of Mines, the chairman reminded him that the Commission was not a board of amateurs, and that everything witness said he would be asked to sign. "Witness replied that he would without fear sign everything .he said. He admitted that the provisions of section 51 of the Act had not been strictly enforced, because he thought it not necessary. Fire and pillar workings would increase the danger to men, and extra precautions should have been taken. Specially experienced men should have been put in charge of the work. He did not notify the company to,that effect, because experienced men were working there at the time of his visit. The last report sent bv him about the mine to anyone in authority prior to June 21st last wa« on October 14th. Mr. Handyside, managing director of the Nightcaps Company, expressed the o-pinion -that the accident was due to the effect of tho earthquake on. the previous. Thursday.
