LIBERAL AND LABOR FEDERATION AND THE GOVERNMENT.
A JIBE AT MR. FOWLDS. Special to TimesWELLINGTON. September I. In the course of his remarks on Friday night regarding the new duties on hoots and shoes, Mr. Massey quoted some resolutions recently passed by a political organisation in Auckland. - The effect of the resolutions was an expression of opinion that the new duties would penalise the workers and leave the impost on the well-to-do classes who were best able to pay. The body he referred to, ho said, was the Liberal and Labor Federation. The Hon. Mr. Millar: Which federation ? Mr. Massey: The Auckland AVest branch. It was, lie said, somewhat remarkable that these people, who were supposed to be supporters of tlie Government, should find it necessary to protest against the policy of the Minister for Customs and of that freetrader and most recent convert to high protective duties, the Hon. Geo. Fowlds.
